US spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs, investment products that track Bitcoin’s price without requiring investors to hold the coin directly) recorded a net outflow of $484.9 million on Oct. 7, their largest single-day withdrawal since June 25. At the same time, US spot Ethereum ETFs hit a nine-month high in withdrawals, pushing combined losses across both asset classes to roughly $646 million in a single day.
US spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded more than $480 million in Oct. 7 outflows
Investors pulled $484.9 million out of the 12 US spot Bitcoin ETFs on Oct. 7, according to Farside Investors flow data. That means more than nearly half a billion dollars left these funds in one trading session — the biggest single-day exodus since late June. Three funds led the outflows. BlackRock’s IBIT saw $207.7 million leave its holdings, Fidelity’s FBTC lost $105.1 million, and ARK Invest’s ARKB recorded $101.7 million in withdrawals. These three funds alone accounted for more than $414 million of the day’s total exit. For related coverage, see Japan Sells ¥2.59T in Foreign Debt: Bitcoin Impact.
Bitcoin’s spot price fell in step with the outflows. According to CryptoSlate, BTC dropped below $83,000 during the reporting period. At the time of this writing, Bitcoin traded at $80,944, down roughly 3% over 24 hours.
The scale of the reversal stands out against the recent backdrop. Bitfinex noted that daily Bitcoin ETF inflows had averaged $341.7 million in mid-September before slowing to about $35 million over the five sessions through Oct. 6 — a sharp deceleration that preceded Tuesday’s large-scale exit. This cooling institutional appetite echoes earlier periods when Bitcoin dipped on renewed rate concerns, suggesting macro sentiment continues to weigh on fund flows.
Ethereum ETF withdrawals reached a nine-month high
US spot Ethereum ETFs recorded a net outflow of $160.9 million on Oct. 7. CryptoSlate reported that the five-session cumulative loss reached $506.3 million, the largest rolling withdrawal since January — making Oct. 7 part of a nine-month high in Ethereum ETF outflows.
BlackRock’s ETHA accounted for the bulk of the Ethereum outflows at $116.1 million, while Grayscale’s ETHE contributed another $25.8 million. Together, those two funds drove the majority of the day’s Ethereum ETF withdrawals.
Ethereum’s spot price was also under pressure, trading at $2,430.97 at the time of data collection, reflecting a broader risk-off environment across both major crypto assets on the day.
What the simultaneous ETF outflows signal for crypto investors
When both Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs see large outflows on the same day, it typically signals that institutional investors — the funds and financial advisers who use ETFs to gain crypto exposure — are stepping back from the market at the same time. The combined $646 million exit on Oct. 7 is a meaningful one-day number for a market that had been attracting steady inflows just weeks earlier.
It is important to distinguish what ETF outflows mean versus what they do not. Outflows do not automatically mean those investors are permanently leaving crypto. They could be taking profits, repositioning ahead of economic data, or responding to short-term price weakness. Bitfinex flagged the $84,000 level as a key cost-basis zone for many Bitcoin holders, suggesting the price decline through that threshold may have triggered additional selling pressure.
For someone who holds a small amount of Bitcoin or Ethereum on a retail platform, a single day of ETF outflows is not a signal to panic. However, the context matters: the drop from a $341.7 million inflow average in September to just $35 million before the reversal shows that institutional appetite had already softened. That broader cooling, visible in Bitcoin’s sensitivity to macro signals like Treasury yield moves, is worth watching. The Crypto Fear and Greed Index stood at 64, still in “Greed” territory, suggesting the wider retail market had not yet shifted to fear — a gap between institutional and retail sentiment worth monitoring. Observers tracking corporate Bitcoin strategies, such as large holders managing billion-dollar positions, will be watching whether this institutional withdrawal deepens or reverses in the coming sessions.
