Grayscale’s managing director Krista Lynch says the crypto ETF market has entered a new era, citing a Zcash exchange-traded fund crossing the $1 billion mark as evidence that investor appetite for crypto ETFs now extends well beyond Bitcoin and Ethereum.
Zcash ETF Reaches the $1 Billion Milestone
A Zcash ETF has hit $1 billion in assets, a threshold that signals real demand for a fund built around a privacy-focused cryptocurrency. Zcash (ZEC) is a digital currency that lets users transact with optional privacy protections, shielding transaction details from public view on its blockchain. Reaching $1 billion in an ETF means investors have collectively placed that amount into the fund. That is money committed by people who want exposure to Zcash’s price without holding the coin directly, similar to how a gold ETF tracks gold prices without requiring investors to store physical bars. Earlier price movement tied to ETF expectations already signaled market interest; Zcash jumped 48% above $800 on ETF buzz ahead of this milestone. Grayscale’s Krista Lynch Points to a New ETF Era
Krista Lynch, managing director at Grayscale, the digital asset management firm behind several prominent crypto funds, described the milestone as a sign of a new ETF era. Her comments position Grayscale as viewing altcoin ETF demand not as speculative but as an established market trend. Grayscale has been central to the broader crypto ETF expansion. The firm filed with the SEC to launch an ETF for the Hyperliquid token, showing its push into altcoin products continues. At the same time, the path has not been smooth: Grayscale previously withdrew SEC filings for three proposed altcoin ETFs, a reminder that regulatory approval for non-Bitcoin funds remains uncertain.
What the Zcash Milestone Could Mean for Crypto ETFs
A $1 billion fund for an altcoin like Zcash suggests the ETF model is beginning to replicate the accessibility it brought to Bitcoin for smaller digital assets. For comparison, Ethereum ETFs launched with over $10.36 billion in opening assets, much of it converted from Grayscale’s existing Ethereum trust, establishing that demand for non-Bitcoin crypto ETFs was real.
The Zcash figure is smaller, but it represents inflows into a privacy coin product, a category that has faced heightened regulatory scrutiny over concerns about anonymous transactions. Reaching $1 billion under those conditions adds weight to the milestone as a signal of genuine investor conviction. According to CoinGecko, Zcash is one of the longer-standing privacy-focused cryptocurrencies, launched in 2016.
For someone new to crypto, the practical takeaway is straightforward: more coins becoming available as regulated ETF products means more ways to gain exposure through a standard brokerage account, without creating a crypto wallet or managing private keys. Whether this expansion continues will depend on ongoing regulatory decisions, and broader market conclusions require more data beyond a single fund’s milestone.
