A hacker turned 25 cents of bitcoin into 46 billion fake BTC tokens on a DeFi bridge, according to reporting on a September 2026 exploit of the Symbiosis Bitcoin Bridge. The tiny deposit did not create real bitcoin. It exploited software flaws to mint a flood of unbacked tokens, and the real damage was far smaller than that headline number suggests.
Let us start with the basics. A DeFi bridge is a tool that moves value between different blockchains. Symbiosis ran one for Bitcoin, and on September 11, 2026, someone broke it. For related coverage, see Bitcoin Wallets Followed Whales, Philadelphia Fed Paper Finds.
What the DeFi bridge hack headline reports
The story centers on a deposit worth roughly 25 cents. In bitcoin terms, that was 330 satoshis, the smallest units of a bitcoin, according to a postmortem from Symbiosis. For related coverage, see ARMA Heads to Wednesday Markup Amid US Bitcoin Reserve Debate.

That deposit was worth about $0.25, and it produced roughly 46.1 billion unbacked syBTC, a bridge token meant to represent bitcoin, based on blockchain data reviewed by CoinDesk. For related coverage, see U.S. Strategic Bitcoin Reserve Bill: House Review Wednesday.
Symbiosis says the attacker exploited two software flaws that worked together. One let the attacker impersonate an authorized depositor and the portal administrator. The other pushed the bridge fee below zero, which inflated the amount of tokens minted.
The protocol was blunt about how these bugs combined. “Neither flaw was sufficient on its own,” Symbiosis wrote in its report.
The attack was fast and spread across networks. Symbiosis says 12 malicious deposits ran across BNB Chain, Ethereum and Rootstock in roughly four minutes.

Why 46 billion fake BTC tokens are not 46 billion bitcoin
This is the part that matters most for a regular reader. The 46 billion figure counts fake bridge tokens, not real bitcoin. Bitcoin’s actual supply is capped near 21 million coins, and this event did not change that.
The tokens were unbacked. That means no real bitcoin sat behind them, so their face value was not money the attacker could simply walk away with. Multiplying 46 billion by a bitcoin price would produce a fantasy number, not a loss.
To see how small the real system was, look at the pre-incident figures. Symbiosis reported only about 13.91 syBTC in total supply beforehand, with 11.26 syBTC of liquidity in pools paired with tokens like BTCB, cbBTC, WBTC and RBTC.
So the real damage was measured in a handful of coins, not billions. Symbiosis put preliminary losses among users and liquidity providers at 9.97 BTC.

None of this touched bitcoin’s own network. For someone holding a little BTC on an exchange like Coinbase, this incident lived entirely on a third-party bridge, not on the Bitcoin blockchain itself.
What remains unknown about the bridge exploit and its impact
Some of the story is still open. The exact 46.1 billion mint total and all 12 transactions come from CoinDesk’s blockchain review, and no transaction hashes or explorer pages were confirmed here. Treat that headline number as a reported estimate, not a settled fact.
The recovery picture is also unfinished. Symbiosis says bitcoin payouts to the attacker never completed, and it evacuated roughly 15.2 BTC of portal funds to reserve addresses within hours.
Evacuated funds are not the same as recovered stolen funds. The protocol says its white-hat window closed with no response, so its 20% offer now applies to information that leads to recovery.
Compensation remains a plan, not a completed act. Symbiosis says it intends to cover stolen funds partly from the evacuated bitcoin and through individual liquidity provider plans. It says the Bitcoin-side logic will be rewritten and independently audited before the bridge reopens, with a full-system audit also commissioned.
Bitcoin itself was steady through all this. The asset traded near $76,416 at the time of writing, down about 2.8% on the day, a move with no established link to this bridge exploit.
The practical takeaway is simple. A scary headline number can describe fake tokens on one small bridge, while the real, reported losses stay in the single digits of BTC. Bridges add convenience, but they also add risk, and this event is a reminder to separate a token’s printed quantity from its actual backing.
