NEAR Protocol has announced a simpler way for users to recover their accounts, while keeping traditional seed phrases as an option. The move is aimed at giving people more flexibility when they need to regain access to a NEAR account.
Account recovery means getting back into your wallet or account when you have lost your login credentials. For most crypto networks, that has meant a seed phrase: a list of 12 or 24 words that acts as a master key to your funds. For related coverage, see Lido Community Staking Module Adds DVT Clusters.
NEAR Protocol is adding a new recovery path that the project describes as simpler, according to an announcement from the official NEAR Protocol account on X. The project has not announced that seed phrases are going away. Both options are set to coexist. For related coverage, see Russia Adds Sberbank to Crypto Exchange Register.
What “simpler account recovery” actually means
Seed phrases are powerful but unforgiving. Lose the words, lose the account. There is no customer support line and no password reset email. That barrier has kept many people away from self-custody wallets. For related coverage, see Standard Chartered Launches RLUSD Custody Through DIFC.
A simpler recovery option could lower that barrier. However, the NEAR Protocol blog has not yet published the full technical details of how the new method works. The specific recovery mechanism, any eligibility conditions, and the rollout timeline have not been confirmed in the available information. Until NEAR publishes those details, users should not change how they currently secure their accounts based on this announcement alone. For related coverage, see Standard Chartered Launches RLUSD Custody on XRP Ledger.
Seed phrases are staying, not disappearing
The announcement frames the new option as an addition, not a replacement. That distinction matters. Removing seed phrases entirely would shift account control away from users, which raises its own security questions.
Any recovery system involves a tradeoff. Seed phrases put full control in the user’s hands; simpler recovery options often introduce a third party or a recovery contact who could, in theory, be targeted. NEAR has not yet explained where the new method sits on that spectrum.
Users who already have a seed phrase stored safely have no immediate reason to act. Those setting up a new NEAR account should wait for the official implementation details before deciding which recovery path to use.
What to do next
If you hold NEAR tokens or use a NEAR-based application, the practical step is to check the NEAR Protocol blog for the full announcement once it is published. Look specifically for how the new recovery method works, what information or contacts it relies on, and whether existing accounts can opt in.
Account security decisions should always be based on documented, official guidance rather than a headline summary. Both seed phrases and newer recovery methods can be appropriate depending on your situation, and understanding the tradeoffs is the most important step before making any change.
