Exchanges recorded a one-day net withdrawal of 169,770 ETH, the largest single-day outflow in over four months, according to on-chain analytics firm Santiment. That means more Ethereum left tracked crypto exchanges than entered them during that 24-hour window, a reading traders watch closely as a potential signal of shifting holder behavior.
Santiment Reports 169,770 ETH Leaves Exchanges in a Single Day
The figure comes from Santiment data highlighted by CryptoSlate, which tracks the net balance of ETH moving into and out of centralized exchanges. A net withdrawal means the total amount of ETH removed from exchange wallets exceeded the amount deposited over the same period. At 169,770 ETH, the single-day reading was the largest recorded in more than four months. To put that volume in perspective, it represents a significant portion of the ETH that was sitting available for immediate trading on those platforms. This kind of reading draws attention because exchange balances are one of the few on-chain metrics visible to anyone with an internet connection. When balances drop sharply, it often means holders moved coins to private wallets or cold storage, reducing the supply sitting ready to sell. This has previously coincided with periods of tighter supply on exchanges, which some analysts connect to price support. However, those connections are not guaranteed and do not hold in every market cycle.
What a Net ETH Exchange Withdrawal Actually Measures
A net withdrawal is calculated by subtracting all ETH deposits to tracked exchange addresses from all ETH withdrawals during the same window. If withdrawals are larger, the result is a net outflow, as was the case here.
Exchange flow data is derived from on-chain records, making it publicly verifiable. But what the movement means is harder to pin down. ETH leaving an exchange could reflect a long-term holder moving to cold storage, a large institution changing custodians, an internal transfer between wallets controlled by the same entity, or preparation for activity in decentralized finance (DeFi), where ETH is used directly from non-custodial wallets.
None of these scenarios are visible from the flow figure alone. Santiment and similar analytics providers track the net result, not the motivation. Treating a single data point as a directional price signal carries real risk of misreading the market.
It is also worth noting that Ethereum has faced selling pressure in recent weeks, making the outflow reading harder to interpret in isolation. A large withdrawal during a period of downward price pressure could mean very different things than the same figure during a rally.
How to Put the Four-Month High in Context
The “largest in four months” comparison tells us this reading is unusual relative to recent daily flow data, but it does not tell us whether it will persist. A single day of elevated outflows is not a trend. For that reading to carry more weight, analysts typically look for sustained net withdrawals over multiple days or weeks, accompanied by falling exchange balances overall.
Ethereum ETF flows add another layer of complexity. US spot Ethereum ETF flow data tracked by Farside shows the institutional demand picture separately from on-chain exchange movements. The two data sets do not always move in the same direction, and neither is a reliable standalone predictor of price.
For context on how Ethereum exchange outflows have interacted with institutional product flows before, the nine-month high in Ethereum withdrawals earlier this year showed a similar pattern where large outflow readings preceded a period of sideways price action rather than a clean rally.
Anyone following Ethereum closely should track subsequent exchange balance data over the next several days to see whether this outflow represents the start of a sustained trend or a one-off repositioning event. A single large reading is notable, but the direction of exchange balances over a week or two carries more signal than any single day’s number.
For those newer to crypto, the practical takeaway is straightforward: when large amounts of ETH leave exchanges, it can indicate that long-term holders are moving their coins somewhere other than a trading platform. That reduces the immediately available supply, but it does not guarantee prices will rise. Watch for whether the pattern continues before drawing conclusions about what it means for Ethereum’s direction. And for anyone considering exposure to Ethereum through ETF products, on-chain exchange flow data is one metric among many, and should not be read as a buy or sell signal on its own.
